Police: Man shot churchgoers over liberal views
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - "An unemployed man accused of opening fire with a shotgun and killing two people at a Unitarian Universalist church apparently targeted the congregation out of hatred for its support of liberal social policies, police said Monday.....
"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that and his stated hatred of the liberal movement," Owen said at a news conference."

Oh, boy. The liberals took his job? Anyway, I hope that congregation can heal, and I'm glad that no kids were harmed.. I'm also a UU, and I know that I have a small amount of fear about people flipping on a dime like that about the kinds of work we do. |

Nothing ground-breaking, to be sure.. nothing that hasn't been done in the past. But in the Rio Grande Valley, the GLBT community is very very silent, for fear of alienating their families, ostracism... very Catholic heavy area; and trying to reach out to that demographic, or even admitting that there are people in this area who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered makes people extremely uncomfortable. We've encountered advertising troubles (convenient ommissions) whenever we've put ads in the papers about our being an open, loving community that is GLBT friendly.
We're behind the times like at least 20 years down here.. We also do work to help those who have been wrongfully detained in the processing centers down here..
Like I said. Nothing exciting or new, but we're kind of isolated as a liberal fellowship in the Valley. |

Voj, that makes sense. I hadn't even thought about how conservative (catholic) your area would be, being so close to the border. But what about Santerians? Aren't there a large amount of liberal divergent catholics as well?
I know my friend from Mexico City was catholic, but WAAAAY out there in things the catholic church does not teach....like curses and voodoo. |

There are tons of herberias around here- complete with candles, icons and instructions.. But homosexuality is one of those social taboos that is having trouble even becoming mainstream acceptable down here. There are some gay clubs that are 'underground', but just like the general public not everyone feels comfortable hanging out at a club. I've been combing the internet networking sites looking for some kind of Rio Grande Valley GLBT information, and so far, my searches have been dead-ended one way or another.
There aren't any resource centers down here for the teenagers/young adults who are having depression and are at risk for suicide because of the silence issue... There was even a study done by the local university to see what efforts have been done in the past- and the few outreach projects that were tried, one of them by the Basilica no less, was met with silence and ripped down/defaced advertisements. I'm sure that part happens everywhere... |

That is so sad.
Even the semi-conservative church I attended many years was loving and accepting of the GLBT community. Well, they did have a little bit of an issue with them (and straights) practicing outside of marriage which I kind of turned my head to, but there were several GL's in our church who were very happy and welcomed. Just as welcomed as those of us straight people who were also doing things outside of marriage.
As one person told me....accepting and loving the person regardless, is like accepting and loving a smoker. Being a smoker doesn't mean you are going to hell. It just smells like you have already been there.
(bad, I know) |

Yeah, I was a smoker when I heard it from a youth pastor. It really said a lot to me. |
